Common Questions About Sarah’s House
If you are in need of cancer treatment, we understand this is most likely a very stressful period in your life. You probably have a lot of questions about everything relating to your treatment, and on this page, we attempt to answer some of those questions about Sarah’s House and what it might mean for you.
Sarah’s House is a 9 bedroom hospitality house serving adult patients who are receiving treatment at the Lafayette Family Cancer Center in Brewer.
Guests are able to stay at Sarah’s House while they are receiving treatment at Cancer Care. Depending on appointment times, guests may be able to come in the evening before a scheduled appointment and/or stay the evening after.
If you travel 30 miles or more (one way) from Cancer Care you are eligible.
Referrals to Sarah’s House are made by the Patient Advocates at Cancer Care. They can be reached in person at Cancer Care or you can call them to arrange the referral.
Guests are REQUIRED to have an adult caregiver stay with them. An adult caregiver could be a family member (over age 18), or a friend. They are not required to be a medical professional. Sarah’s House is a hospitality house, our staff/volunteers are not medical professionals. It is the caregivers’ responsibility to be sure the patient receives the proper level of care and attention at all times.
We have rooms furnished with either a queen/king or two twins. We do our best to accommodate requests however, due to a limited number of rooms and accessibility we may need to relocate guests. Each room has a private bath. All towels and bedding are provided. Two bedrooms are ADA compliant. Five bedrooms are located on the first floor and four on the second level.
The kitchen is fully stocked with dishes, cooking utensils and basic pantry items. You need only bring your personal items and your food. You will be provided a shelf in the refrigerator and in the pantry to store your food items. Sarah’s House guests are responsible for their own meal preparation.
Once the referral from Cancer Care has been made we schedule an orientation of Sarah’s House and review our guest policies. Guests are able to stay Monday through Thursday nights. When you leave for your Friday appointment we ask you to return your keys and pick them up the following week. Check in is between 8:30 and 4:30. Any exceptions to the schedule need to be approved in advance by the House Manager.
While all of us at Sarah’s house love our furry friends and companions, we do not allow pets to stay unless they are licensed service dogs.
Our rooms are designed to accommodate two people, a patient and an adult caregiver. Your child must be 18 years old or older and capable of being your caregiver to stay at Sarah’s House.
Sarah’s House has a suggested donation of $15.00 per night. If that presents a financial hardship assistance is available. Income level is not a consideration for Sarah’s House guests.

Yes, we do! The Sarah’s House van was generously donated by Darling’s of Bangor. It allows us the ability to transport patients to and from Cancer Care. Occasionally we have folks stay with us that are dropped off for the week and we get them to their appointments daily and then they are picked up here or at Cancer Care to go home for the weekends.
